What's Your Favorite Guitar Magazine?

Getting through my first issue of Premier Guitar magazine. Many of us probably took advantage of the free promo subscription via Jol at Guitar Guru.

Thanks again Jol!!!

I'm an old GP fan, and have stuck with them over the years. GW-- not so much, just depends. Vintage Guitar is cool for serious gear insight.

Actually there are a lot of guitar magazines these days.

Quite a few years back, Guitar Shop mag was around for a short time, but folded up. I loved that magazine and assumed they went away because they didn't run enough advertising. That mag was very low-clutter.

Nowadays I don't get any mags regularly because of the web, and the cost of mags today. Anyway, Premier Guitar is a pretty impressive rag, with lots of content for a monthly circulation! Plenty of ads too, but lots of interesting lines representing, besides just the same old mainstream Fender, Marshall, Ernie Ball & PRS spreads. Premier's rates must be quite a bit more forgiving than GP & GW's.

Artwork and page layout are top quality though!

The June '08 issue features lots of gear reviews, a Taylor factory tour, Lace tour, Leslie West interview and plenty more. Pretty hefty for one issue. Premier appears to be owned and published by musicians as well.

So I'm rating Premier Guitar a 9.3 out of 10, and say: "Look out GP!".

Any thoughts out there from others new to the Premier Guitar readership??

GP was the last print magazine I read before I too discovered Premier Guitar.

good to see you kept the old Stratoblogster alive during my long hiatus!

I wholeheartedly agree. Premier guitar is an awesome magazine, and I jumped to the subscription thanks to Jol's blog. I took an issue when I was at NAMM, and I already started like their magazine. They're more gear and tech oriented, while the other big names like GW and GP cover players and the gear.

The one problem being that I don't seeing them becoming as mainstream as the others because the covers have guitars instead of guitarists. That just means more gear and vintage talk, which is what i'm interested in.

Huge fan of Premiere Guitar, been a subscriber for several months now, even though you can read the entire magazine online for free... which rocks.

Thanks for the feedback! Seems like we have similar viewpoints on Premier so far.

Premier Guitar also has a great online presence, plenty of content on their site and their email newsletter always has some great content.

Whatever happened to 'Guitar For The Practicing Musician'? I subscribed to that for years back in the late 80's early 90's.

Premier Guitar is good, but it's not available here in the UK. I only have a copy of the May edition (where my blog was reviewed) because a friend in Chicago found a copy and sent it to me.

I no longer dress in all black and have long hair — well, I no longer have long hair — and I don't play high-gain thud-rock, so I have no use for Guitar World. Guitar Edge right now has columns from John 5 and Pete Anderson, who are great players, but I'm still not moved. For the longest time, since Guitar for the Practicing Musician went under, Guitar Player was the only readable guitar mag out there. I too loved Guitar Shop, and I'm still wanting to get a spare Tele so I can make it a baritone like they showed me.

I also jumped on Premier, and as a gear magazine, it's tops. It doesn't have nearly as much lessony stuff as Guitar Player, so I'll still look at that, too. I have to say good things about Fretboard Journal, too.

I really dig Premier too. I love them all, in some strange way, but, Premier is tops. I'll be blogging about my at-this-very-moment-favorite guitar mag and linking back to you JP as the source of the question. Schweet.

Thanks everyone again for stopping by!

GL: As a couple other guys mentioned, Premier has tons of online content. I think someone said the entire issues are online. Anyway, check that out!

Dave: Great comment! We definitely share the same opinion on GW.

IG: Thanks for the loop!!

I'm not convinced yet about Premier. It's an unbelievable deal (thanks Jol!), but I haven't gotten into it yet. I've received a few issues so far, but they haven't kept me all that interested. Maybe I'll give it a second look. Right now, I'd have to say that my favorite mag is Guitar Player. Maybe Premier can change my mind.
