Sonny Landreth Feature at Chicago Tribune

Click on photo for killer Sonny Landreth youtube video!!!

Chicago Tribune writer Kevin Williams posted a rousing article about Sonny Landreth in anticipation of Sonny's upcoming Aug. 6th gig at the Evanston SPACE (helluva place too-- David Lindley plays there tonight!).

Williams really puts on his guitar geek in the article too, which is always a treat to see in a mainstream media piece.

"...Landreth has technique that is staggering. As slide guitar players go, he is nonpareil, having ginned up a technique that lets him fret notes and chords while he's playing slide. But it's all in the service of the music..."

And that's just a taste, as the writer musters up for a slam on Steve Vai. But all in good fun... although some Windy City Vai fans are probably keying this guy's Prius as I write.

In looking for a good Landreth photo, I also discovered the photography & paintings of Artist Bob Bunce at www.bobbunce.com

Be sure to visit www.sonnylandreth.com and check the tour schedule link, cuz he just might be coming to your area! I missed Sonny's July 2nd Portland gig, and I'm still feelin' mighty LAME.

Erja Lyytinen - Slide Guitar Chick from Finland

Watch this gal slide! We've featured veteran Strat-o-Sister Erja Lyytinen previously, so click on her name for Erja's web links and more video. A big deal on the Euro Blues circuit, the Italians are calling her the "Bonnie Raitt of Finland". Erja loves G&L semi-hollow T shapes, sometimes playing a red one with P90's (Bluesboy model). The blue one in this video is sportin' the triple Z-Coil config. normally associated with the Comanche S-type model.

This girl must be a petite size considering how big both the guitar and bottleneck slide appear. But she takes no petite approach to rippin' through some Blues! Damn!

CLICK HERE for another MUST SEE Erja jam!

If the girl don't give ya chills-- Jack, you dead!

Enjoy!

Billy Rowe's Rock N' Roll Relics - Strat for Friday #135

Food & Beverage Suggestion:

IN-N-OUT #1- Double-Double, Fries & Root Beer

Strawberry Shake

Click photos for detailed close ups!

This week's Friday feature profiles Bay Area rocker and vintage replica builder Billy Rowe. That's why two separate guitars are pictured above. As a guitarist, Rowe helped found 80's band Jetboy which has recently re-formed after 19 years and is currently recording. After the original Jetboy run, Billy played 5 European tours with the band American Heartbreak. In the late 90's Billy was Chris Isaak's guitar tech and also worked on Isaac's "Speak of the Devil" album.

In recent years, Rowe has been building heavily distressed F-type guitars under the Rock N' Roll Relics moniker. The black model in the top photo was built for Stevie D. of Buckcherry who will be playing this guitar soon on tour with Buckcherry opening for KISS. GNR's Gilby Clarke is also playing one of Billy's guitars.

At www.rocknrollrelics.net be sure to visit the "Pickers" link at the menu and check out the spiffy color palette overlay tool. Also check the galleries.

Billy shares the following about his builds:

"...For all my Rock N' Roll Relics I use reissued Fender hardware, all bodies and necks are sprayed with nitro from Guitar Re-Ranch, the bodies I get hand cut from a local Luthier here in town. I've also used Guitar Mill bodies which are great. I use all Ash and Alder to match vintage specs unless a special request from a customer for say Pine or Mahogany. Necks I get from various sources like All Parts or I get my Luthier to cut them for me, Depends on what the customer is after. Most customers want the vintage profiles and what is the most popular is the standard 7-1/4 C shape neck from All Parts.

With pickups I've used all sorts from Duncan, Fralin to Fender etc, I always leave that up to the customer. But now I have a guy who hand winds me pickups, Nunley Custom and they are hands down the best I've come across and is what I've used exclusively for about 10 builds now, I use em' myself as well ! I also use Luxe capacitors when I do a 'Period Piece' to give it that complete vintage look Inside and out ! Also for a 'period piece' guitars (mainly Tele's) I'll use Glendale milled jack cups and slot head screws..."

Billy has also recently used Slider's Vintage Classic pickups in projects.

Ed note: I'm just diggin' that Converse sticker! What's more American than a well worn pair of black Chuck high-tops-- & a well worn black Strat.

Art Guitars & Amps by Phil Sylvester

The "Fracturecaster" above is a fully functioning Strat "mod" by Phil Sylvester of Portland, OR.

I've featured this before. In fact, we've adopted it into the Strat-O-Blogster theme in the header of this blog. Phil Sylvester, fine artist, art teacher, guitarist and Berklee grad, actually created the Fracturecaster while experimenting with body wood resonance characteristics. He claims to prefer the tone of what resulted above. That's why I referred to it as a mod-- as well as an art piece.

In this respect, I think Fracturecaster is an appropriate symbol for Strat tone geeks and tweakers everywhere, hence a symbol here too.

Sylvester's more recent endeavors can be seen at his website: PheoGuitars.com where guitars are presented more in a fine arts gallery fashion and setting. As odd as they may appear, to me they also give off an unexplainably natural vibe. Before you traditionalists out there shut down, first ask yourselves, "Would Billy Gibbons be seen with a Phil Sylvester guitar?"

I think you know the answer to that question!

And Phil's a total tube freak too. Just wait'll ya see the 50's hair dryer amp! Also, the site's "News" menu link features a video that you absolutely must watch, produced by the local PBS television affiliate. Finally & ironically, the Fracturecaster is strangely absent from the website, even though Sylvester refers to it as his most well known work. I suppose that's why I'm here-- to keep it alive...

Just like the infamous Voodoo Donut, the guitar art of Phil Sylvester represents the art-quirky side of Portland culture.

Singapore Guitar Collector Sniffs Out Strats! Literally.

Kelvin Ho is a guitar collector in Singapore who has turned $10K into $1.3 million by collecting guitars. Apparently, he's got a few nice old Strats, among other instruments, that he reportedly bought from "retired musicians for a few hundred dollars".

In an old online story I had bookmarked (link no longer available), Ho talked about being able to initially determine a guitar's value by smell.

My advise-- stay way from this man and do not let him sniff your guitar!

Dave Matthews Plays Strat on Letterman

Promoting their new DMB album "Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King", Dave Matthews and crew showed up on Letterman last night (7/27/09). Oddly, though there are several Youtube clips of the interview portion, I haven't yet found the performance segment featuring the title cut.

Nevertheless, Matthews was wielding the Strat you see pictured, sporting a coupla mini humbuckers of some kind. No other data.

Both the interview and performance were lotsa fun. The new tune was very cool! DMB fans should be in hog heaven right now.

Jeff Beck "What Mama Said" - What Movie Line?

The other night I woke up in front of the TV to an old movie, hearing the line, "Did ya'll hear what mama said?!!", as used in this Jeff Beck tune.

Who knows what movie I'm talking about? I know you can research it online, but does anyone already just happen know the movie?

Watch how Jeff Beck picks with his fingers. Y'know, your picking hand fingertips will get tough and callused just like the fretting hand. I keep my nails real short, and either pick downstrokes for sharp attack or hit the strings sideways across the nail & fingertip. Once things toughen up and you get used to it, you gain a lot of freedom over relying upon a pick. I'm also getting a nice callus on the outside of my thumb from the bass strings.

I know that classical, flamenco and many finger stylists really groom their nails to precision for picking, but if you're doing aggressive blues & rock, ya better keep 'em short and even, or they'll be toast.

For clean alternate picking a la "Hot Rod Lincoln", it's still hard to beat a pick though.

PRS 305 - A Strat or Not a Strat?

(photo: www.prsguitars.com)
PRS 305 GuitarRecently profiled at Rock House Blog (see specs there), the new PRS 305 is now a production model. According to a youtube DEMO VIDEO by UK dealer Chapman Guitars, the 305 started off as a PRS Private Stock instrument.

Obviously PRS is vying for a little Strat-o-marketshare with this one, but how Stratty does it sound? I found the above demo video link puzzlingly amusing... or maybe amusingly puzzling, but hardly curiously refreshing. These Altoid snorting blokes seem to be conducting the demo as if the guitar were a standard PRS humbucker config until beard boy goes clean tones, country picking and totally defaults the guitar into Tele implications; sidestepping any kind of Strat comparisons (no offense intended to Tele fans). I mean, look at the pickup config and the 5 pos switch. Was that an accident?

Then holding a distorted note, beard boy expresses great pleasure with a "...You con't DOO that on a regulah S-type guitah... it won't happen..."

Are you f*#!!ng kidding me?!!!

Also seems like they've got .008 - 038's. Put some real strings on it!!!

Sorry, only 305 demo I can find so far. "Crazy birds, crazy birds..."

No doubt at all that the 305 is a well built guitar. But what identity are they going for??

Robin Trower's Drummer... Norm Peterson? Cheers?

"Still Too Rollin' Stoned"

I believe this performance was on Trower's 60th birthday. Anyone who uses a Marshall to blow out the candles at their 60th is a true warrior. Makes ya wanna dust off the old phase shifter, huh. These days vocalist Davey Pattison does a respectable job filling the shoes of the late James Dewar-- though Jimmy is still sorely missed.

I dream of Paul Rogers singing with Trower.

Are we just too rollin' stoned, or is that Norm on drums???

I mean, what if it really was Norm, and they just paid him with beer to play drums...

Quartz Crystal Guitar FRETS by Erich Stone

glass fret
(photo: Stewart Oksenhorn/The Aspen Times)

How poetic that a new agey crystal idea like this would come from some dude in Aspen!

Just ran across a news feed from The Aspen Times about Erich Stone, a guy who is refretting guitars and basses with quartz crystals. Apparently some mainstream musicians are using them and raving too. Maybe some have now found "the missing note".

Coincidentally, as my Strat is currently at the spa getting a re-fret, this story is messing with my aura, my karma and my chi!

I can already see the luthiers out there cringing...

The article is interesting though, especially for a newspaper article. So click the above link for the full scoop.

Here's just one of many ethereal comments to whet your appetite:

“...There are unique advantages: depth of the note, clarity, a more energized sound,” he said. “You wouldn't think so, but it's a really surprising difference.” A Fender Stratocaster that began, in Lawson's estimation, as a good guitar, “became a great one...”

I've thought about glass, ceramic or maybe Pyrex frets before but worry about 'em cracking, especially when trying to install.

Check out the article!

G&L Legacy "Rustic" Blonde- Strat for Friday #134

G&L Rustic Guitar Models
"Rustic" is G&L's term for aged, distressed and the ever popular, Fender registered "RELIC". This Rustic Blonde Legacy features some light ciggy burnage at the headstock, strap wear at upper bout, finish checking overall and dull aged metal hardware. As this sort of stuff goes, G&L's offering stays on the conservative side with their Rustic touches, which is probably more realistic... in a rustic way anyway. Just enough for comfort without becoming a rodeo fatality-- "We tied this guitar to our hi-grit coated mechanical bull for 36 hours! Yee Haw!!!".

Y'know, "rustic" is term cooks like to use when they don't wanna follow all those French rules for preparing everything so perfect and refined. I'm all for that! Toss me a pork chop & let's keep it rustic!

Specs and MUCH better photos are available at Guitar Adoptions via the "Electric Guitars" >> "G&L Guitars" menu links where you can peruse a sizable & tasty G&L selection. Guitar Adoptions is also a dealer for Michael Tuttle custom guitars, Finland's Flaxwood line and other hi-end gear lines.

Fender Strat Neck Shape & Contour Diagrams

Fender Neck Shape Profiles

Strat Neck Chart(image orig. from Musician's Friend Strat Buyer's Guide)
CLICK on chart for larger view

Here's some handy reference illustrations for anyone in a spin over "soft V, hard V, C, etc..." when reading about neck shapes. The most common & popular shape for Strats overall is "C". Not to say what's best for you, just that there's more C's around. V's are old school and showing up in many reissues.

Radius is the curvature of the fretboard. We won't get into all the various radius specs, but for anyone confused about "Compound Radius", just know that on this type of neck, the fretboard flattens out as it gets wider, higher up toward the guitar body. Stew-Mac's (Compound Radius Explained) gives ya the full NASA briefing complete with geometric-trig diagrams.

If you're looking for Strat-style replacement necks, here's a nice find currently available from Angela Instruments eBay Store:

Lindy Fralin Neck
That's right, Fralin is into necks too! Other sources for replacement necks are:

Slider's Classic 59 pickups

Hand Scatter Wound Guitar Pickups
Slider's 59 Classic Pickups
Vintage Bakelite Guitar Pickup Covers
We just recieved word from Down Under that pickup voodoo master Rod McQueen of Slider's Vintage Classics has graced us with another bakelite clad set of tone wonderment, the Vintage '59 "SRV" config. I'm wondering if the hand winding and magnet charging south of the equator is part of Slider's secret... hmmm...

Check these out at: svcpickups (eBay) where Slider Rod is also currently listing another set of those Classic 57's. Somebody's been busy winding these days!

Here's a word from Rod on the Vintage 59's:

"...This set consists of 3 hand made "scatterwound" Single Coil Pickups with Parchment White vintage correct re-pro "rounded" Bakelite style Pickup Covers. These classic pickup covers alone are very difficult to find and sell for considerable amounts by themselves! You also get a full set of aged 6/32 UNC adjustment screws with natural amber, vintage style rubber spacers.

This set is built with 1959 spec, vintage correct materials and composition. All ready to install with the averaged '59 DC impedances plus the addition of a special 6-7% overwinding to accurately replicate the "mistakenly" overwound set used by SRV in his famed Number 1,

The actual DC Kohms resistance and special winding patterns used on my SRV re-creations is the product of my research and testing and as such remains my personal information

South magnetic polarity, correct for factory post c1958

Winding (clockwise), 42 AWG (.063mm) "Formvar" vintage spec copper wire

AlNiCo 5 etched, staggered height, Hand beveled, individual pole pieces, Low B, high D & G. All individually magnetized by me, using rare earth Neo-dymium Boride polarising magnets to recreate 50 year old Alnico. Exacting, aged replication.

Vintage correct Black vulcanized "forbon" fiber flatwork bobbins with Nickel Silver wiring eyelets

Output wiring is 12" Black (ground) and 12" White active, 22 AWG celanese wrap and waxed braided, cotton outer insulation, vintage pushback wiring

This set is vintage "Straight Up" without a reverse wound/reverse polarity RW/RP middle pickup. All are matched to work perfectly with 3 or 5 way switching and no "out of phase" issues or dramas!

All come with "Relic" Parchment White "rounded" early 50's Bakelite style pickup covers, and a full set of aged 6/32 UNC round head mounting screws with vintage style amber rubber compression spacers. I am happy to fit your color choice (check pic for options)

All are Lacquered, prior to winding to prevent long term corrosion of the wire against the AlNiCo poles (the most common problem I see for killing vintage pickups, check that last pic again!), then Wax potted "post build" to reduce possible high volume microphonics and provide protection to the delicate windings.

All pickups come individually amp tested, labeled and signed with all specs relating to Materials, Polarity and Composition.

These are not an "off the shelf" pickup and are intended for the discerning player or restorer of fine instruments..."

Top Gun Strat Neck Features F-16 Fighter Inlays

Cruise your Strat thru the danger zone with this neck!

Here's a rare & unique find that I'm excited to feature!

eBay seller fox1sparrow aka Commander Gary Penton, US Navy Retired, has a resume that just doesn't quit. Click here for a fascinating bio including some rather extensive luthier training to boot.

Not surprising that a guy with this background and obvious passions would think to blend the cultures of Strat players and fighter pilots. Anyone who's ever pondered the similarities between Strat contours, sports cars, jets and supermodels can appreciate Penton's aesthetics here. A review of the ITEM LISTING details/photos and Penton's website makes it pretty clear that he's all about integrity and excellence. Even the Custom Shop-like brand, back of the headstock, is a nice touch.

Jumbo Shrimp (breaded & deep fried)
Curly Fries
Pepsi (no ice)
Rolaids, Certs & Skittles
Virginia Slims Menthols

Well, what would you call it? This is some serious "rode hard & put away... not yet".

Rittenhouse Guitars, Inc. of Miami builds some severely distressed guitars. This shell pink road rash sister will go nicely with a well worn denim or cotton turquoise shirt. May you not find a cigarette butt at the bottom of your mojito!

And she's on the auction block as we speak. From the "We also take custom orders" line in the eBay listing, I'm assuming Rittenhouse is the lister. Equipped with Lollar Blackface pickups, other ingredients hail from Gotoh, Allparts & CTS. She also sports a real bone nut with a C-Shape 10" radius neck. Seller sez, "...The headstock was intentionally left blank for you to add your favorite Stratocaster vintage decal...".

Alrighty then!

Strats With Issues #3 - Where's the Lei?!

LOCATION-LOCATION-LOCATION!

Helluva a way to pimp a Strat! This listing from Honolulu is killin' me all up in here! I'm thinkin' they could include some island extras with this Surf Green '87 Strat Plus, but then again the gods get offended when certain items leave the islands-- then bad stuff happens to folks.

This is affecting me on different levels. Maybe the Strat should just stay there and people pay to go visit and play it in its native habitat. Kind of a "Strat-o-Lulu Resort-o-Caster Vacation Package" if you will. Picture yourself in that setting, playing a pig roast gig complete with hula dancers, drinking out of a pineapple... Yeah, this Strat has serious issues alright.

Pearly Gates Open Up, Have You the Dinero's

Not often is there a reason to feature Les Paul guitar oriented subject matter here. Anyone easily offended should close their browser now. However, I'm a huge Billy G. fan, and the occasion of a Pearly Gates limited reissue '59 LP series is a long time coming landmark event in our guitar culture, deserving recognition.

Kudos to Gibson for not shotgunning the marketplace with artist models and aged model variations, and taking a more conservative approach to doing the real special stuff when the time is right. Kudos to Billy for whatever he's had to confront in this project. Control!

All the details are at the Gibson Lifestyle blog, but basically if I understand this correctly only 350 are being produced. This number breaks down into some with Billy's signature which replicate the exact condition of his actual '59 Pearly, some with some aging and some without. But you should go read the details yourself. Prices range from $11K to $25K with a point in between at $15K. What's your 401K worth? "Just let me know, if you wanna go...".

Economic woes withstanding, I predict these to sell out FAST, with hopefully even a few American buyers. Not too much later we can also expect a few eBay flippers.

Is there a Hard Rock Cafe in Dubai?

John Mayer Tribute Black Relic DIY Strat Auction

That's right. This isn't a factory John Mayer gone bad, nor is it necessarily a bad factory Strat gone John Mayer, although it could be. But before ya'll start bustin' my balls about, "Mayer is just a pop star pussy boy...", go check out the listing details and the seller info.

I happen to dig the black relic thing because it reminds me of a brisket after 18 hours in the smoke barrel. And it's not like there's a big "JCM" on the pickguard. Nobody's gonna know it's a pop pussy tribute Strat. Myself, I'd call this guitar "Betty Brisket" or maybe "Moppin' & Soppin'".

Oh, the "C" stands for Clayton. Mayer's middle name is Clayton. I looked it up ok! Those of you who thought it might be "RAY", need to get a life and move on with it. It's Clayton.

Prewired Strat Pickguard Configurations

custom loaded pickguards
prewired stratocaster pickguardEJ Pickguard

loaded strat pickguard Texas Specials w/Tonestyler control

The STRATosphere eBay Store sells loaded Eric Johnson pickguards (upper photo). The most time and tweaking with the EJ Strat design went into the pickup configuration. A reliable source told me they went through 17 different configs on the new EJ Rosewood before arriving back at the original EJ config! In other words, all EJ pickup configs are the same-- both the maple slab and RW models currently utilize the same pickups.

Tricked Out Guitar is custom configuring pickguards with Stellartone Tonestyler tone controls (lower photo). The config shown includes Fender Custom Shop Texas Specials. The Tonestyler is not a potentiometer per se', but a smooth rotary switch loaded with tiny chip capacitors, similar to audio gear tone controls.

Several months ago Scott stopped answering questions there because some members were asking things that had already been asked & answered many times, plus some dumb questions too. Scott got fed up.

If you have a question for Scott, you need to register HERE and observe the following per Scott:

Hi David,

I'm going to be doing a lot of traveling soon and have free time to answer questions again on the message board. I only have two requests - [b]no questions about scales, arpeggios, or any other technical questions about music unless the question is accompanied by a 100 money order, and the other request is from you, that when I send my answers, they get posted quickly. If you're OK with that, I'm ready to answer questions. You can post this paragraph.

Thanks,

Philip Sayce Alchemy Live

Here's something for the cats giving me the Kravitz business about the Doyle Bramhall music video I posted yesterday.

This live performance of long time Strat-o-Brother Philip Sayce doing his tune Alchemy should help. The second guitar solo, after the keyboard solo, has some very cool octavia stuff. Besides some of the obvious SRVisms, there's a nice hint of Gilmour "Crazy Diamonds" vibe here and there.

Manny Swan's Near Mint '64 Strat at eBay

Here's one of the sweetest listings I've seen in awhile. It's also a very interesting listing on different levels. First of all, the listing format itself is an ideal textbook example of how an eBay seller can protect their rating and their ass from the trolls. According to the seller, this Strat has had one owner and was hardly played-- very little wear on orig. frets. Sounds too good, so do your diligence kids, this seller is a serious player and seems pretty sincere. 1964 was a transitional year for Fender; earlier is better. The Feb. 64 neck stamp is a good sign, but doesn't tell us everything. You gotta make some calls, you gotta talk to some people, well then do it!

If you have any negative feedback, please e-mail for permission to bid or your bid will be deleted and you will be blocked from any bidding.

If you have more than 1 negative feedback, do NOT bid, your bid will be deleted and you will be blocked from any bidding.

Please ask all questions before bidding, the strat is guaranteed to be as described, but all sales are final, unlike guitar center ;-) Also check my other auctions for other guitar gear.

Check my 100% feedback, READ through what buyers have said about the vintage amps and guitars I have sold here, and you can bid with confidence. ONLY the FINEST GEAR !!!"

Bulletin! Rock Legends Say NO to Death!

The rash of recent celebrity deaths has certainly been disturbing. But instead of dwelling upon it, as a public service, I'm bringing you this message of life and hope! First of all, to the best of my knowledge, the above pictured individuals continue to survive and have no plans of departing anytime soon, in spite of... Well, in spite of whatever, anything.

So if you should find yourself troubled by recent events, just turn your attention to those who give death the finger and carry the torch for zeal and vitality! Well, sort of anyway. Either way, this stuff doesn't get blow by blow coverage on CNN, FOX or GW Blips, so I'm just lettin' ya know about the living.

Who Really Reads Stratoblogster #6 - Sammy Davis Jr.

Pictured here with an early iPod prototype, the late Sammy Davis Jr. was certainly known to break barriers and be on the cutting edge of things.

Now, AT&T, known for dropped calls & dead spots, has introduced their new Limited Service from the Dead Plan-- allowing me to receive calls & texts from the afterlife. So imagine my surprise at a number of recent texts from Mr. Sammy Davis Jr. himself, who as it turns out just happens to be an avid Stratoblogster visitor.

Here's just a sample:

"Y'know babe, back in the day if I knew what I know now, this hip cat woulda picked up a Strat for the ultimate in hipness. Yeah, instead of hangin' with the Rat Pack, I coulda been with the Strat Pack babe! All these groovy Blues Fests and House of Blues clubs sure would have beat withering my life away in Atlantic City & Vegas, singing for plumbers conventioneers and fez wearers from Iowa.

Nowadays, you have the real Strat Pack with Clapton, Beck and Buddy Guy; the Frank, Dino and Sammy for today. So dig these cats, because when you gone, you gone daddyo! And stay hip with the Stratoblogster babe! I'm keepin' my eye on it from out here in the hip-o-sphere!"

Thanks Mr. Davis Jr!

Strat-o-Sister Done Good

One of our first Strat-o-Sister profiles was Orianthi, featured here back in October, 2006. Although an exclusive PRS player, she was waived and added to the Strat-o-Sister list.

I hadn't been keeping up, but just discovered she was working with Michael Jackson, rehearsing for the big tour.

Back in '06 she'd already shared the stage with Santana and Steve Vai, and has since worked with Carrie Underwood, doing a sort of onstage Underwood stunt double with a guitar. Good looks and guitar ability pay big bucks. Fortunately Ori's got both!

Here's a video from Jacko's final rehearsal:

Slider's Vintage Classic Pickups at eBay

"Better living through Bakelite, Formvar & Alnico III!"

Aussie pickup guru Rod McQueen gets pretty esoteric about his vintage pickup construction.

Just read this from Mr. Slider himself:

"'Genuine' old vintage pickups are way overpriced and a huge gamble, here's the problem,

In the 1950's, electronics were pretty basic, to the point that the mechanical counters on the machines that Leo & Co used to handwind pickups were very inconsistent, errors in production, both mechanical and human, were common place. This caused the wide variation in specifications and sound we find in vintage pickups sold today. Some sound great, others are less than impressive! Not to mention the possibility of fatal internal issues, check the pic of what killed a real '56 vintage I rebuilt this week! Old DOESN'T mean good!

Now you can try something you never thought you could, a totally authentic re-creation of the famous late 50's Strat pickup set. Not the modern mass produced offerings that everyone's playing. These are identical those vintage muti-thousand dollar sets you have seen, only better! WHY....

Because these are serious, quality recreations of the originals, but New and 100% mechanically sound, and I do mean SOUND, (pun intended!)

I start with real black forbon bobbins, lacqured to prevent internal corrosion (check that last pic again!) around the sand cast staggered and hand beveled, etched AlNiCo poles. All "scatterwound" to the magical Tone Zone.

The AlNiCo 3 (around 1/2 the power of AlNiCo5) combines with the scatterwinding to achieve clarity, chime and top end shimmer while still retaining a rich and warm "Bluesy" tone with true power. The hand aged, hand bevelled AlNiCo poles add a smooth, mellow warmth to the classic strat "bell tones and quack" without the thin "ice-pick" sterility found with most newer, cheap and machine produced pickups.

For Auction are a matched set of handmade "scatterwound" Classic 57's, a re-creation 1957 spec, single coil pickups for your Strat or Clone or Special project.

Slider's Classic Vintage 57's

All personally handwound in Sydney Australia. All parts are imported from the USA and the highest quality, true to the original Fender pickups. The fact is that all best, major and boutique pickup makers, use parts from a few common suppliers.

This set consists of 3 hand made scatterwound Single Coil Pickups with aged Parchment White 50's re-pro "rounded" Bakelite style relic Pickup Covers. These classic pickup covers are unique to Slider's, very difficult to find and sell for considerable amounts by themselves! You also get a full set of aged 6/32 UNC adjustment screws with natural amber, vintage style rubber spacers.

This set is built to the following spec's and DC resistance

Neck; 5.68 +/- kOhms Middle; 5.62 +/- kOhms Bridge; 5.79 +/- kOhms

North magnetic polarity, correct for factory pre c1958

Winding (clockwise), 42g (.063mm) Heavy "Formvar" vintage spec coil wire

Sand cast, AlNiCo 3 acid etched, staggered height, Hand beveled, individual pole pieces, Low B, high D & G. All individually magnetized by me, using rare earth Neo-dymium Boride polarising magnets to recreate 50 year old Alnico. Exacting, aged replication.

Vintage correct Black vulcanized "forbon" fiber flatwork bobbins with Nickel wiring eyelets

Output wiring is 12" Black (ground) and 12" White active, 22 AWG celanese wrap and waxed braided, cotton outer insulation, vintage pushback wiring

This set has a vintage "Straight Up" NO RW/RP middle pickup. All are matched to work perfectly with 3 or 5 way switching and no "out of phase" issues or dramas!

All come with my "Bakelite" style pickup covers (exclusive to Slider's) and a full set of "age matched" 6/32 UNC round head mounting screws with vintage style amber rubber compression spacers.

All are Lacquered, prior to winding to prevent long term corrosion of the wire against the AlNiCo poles (the most common problem I see for killing vintage pickups), then Wax potted "post build" to reduce possible high volume microphonics and provide protection to the delicate windings.

All pickups come individually labeled and signed with all specs relating to Materials, Polarity and Composition.

These are not an "off the shelf" pickup and are intended for the discerning player or restorer of fine instruments."

A Strat for Friday #132 - SRV #1 Tribute, Custom Aged

SRV Tribute DIY Strat
Build your own SRV #1 Stratocaster

Serious SRV freaks oughta dig this! I would NOT have featured it except for the fact that the seller is a 100% ranked, commended eBay Store (Island Frets) with Power Seller status. Yeah, that's a mouthful, in other words, he's had a zillion opportunities to screw someone but has yet to. This one ends SOON!

If you wanna DIY one of these, check these links:

www.srvguitar.com
www.wonderhowto.com (SRV Strat DIY video tutorial)
Relic Resource Directory (more of that stuff)

OTHERWISE, below is the full listing write-up from the seller:

"Up for bids here is a first-time offering of an SRV "Number 1" guitar! The guitar looks, feels, sounds and plays impeccable! It is IDEAL for any player that is looking to attain that TRUE SRV tone! It is comprised of a 1988 Fender USA 1962 Vintage reissue neck. The neck is aged from just the natural course of time. These necks are superb to start with! The aged/vintage nitro look and feel is awesome. It HAS been refretted with larger JUMBO frets for a better performance, in sync with SRV's! The tuners are vintage-style gold replacements. The body is a Warmoth alder-wood that was shielded and reliced from the original nitro sunburst and then sealed again with nitro, after the aging. The neck pocket even has the "SR Vaughan" wood-burned moniker. The electronics are even more of a bonus! The guard is a Fender 5-ply with the reflective initial stickers. Inside is a trio of Van Zandt Strat pickups and wired into an early-1980's Tokai Springy Sound electronics harness (note the 5-way, very rare and only found in early Tokais). The tone of those pickups are incredible! The whole motivation for this guitar was done after reading an article be rene Martinez and how he set up SRV's Strats, namely the Number 1 famous battered Strat that has become THE Strat mostly associated with the legendary guitarist! We added a similar strap and I put some very cool tour stencil stickers on the exterior of the case to complete the look. However, this guitar transcends the "look" by a mile! It IS meant to be PLAYED! The attached demo video should give you some idea of the potential! It beats any SRV Strat I have ever played. Texas Specials pale in comparison to these Van Zandts! This guitar is perfect for any SRV lover! And, YES it has a REAL period-correct stamped serial number neckplate!

Good luck & Thanks!"

Stratoblogster Back From Camping

It also tried to eat my french toast!
I just returned from camping Sunday 7/5 - Thurs 7/9. We actually found a scorpion when tearing down our tent Thursday. It was between the tent floor and a tarp we put down first. The photo isn't our scorpion, but I'll replace it as soon as wifey downloads the camping photos.

Anyway, while I was away my Raw Vintage saddles and trem springs arrived. Yeah, my Strat might be back from the spa someday.

Lot's of online buzz about Jeff Beck touring throughout Canada this past week. They're really loving him and his cutie bassist too, who happens to be Canadian.

Check these articles from:

Montreal Gazette
Ottawa Citizen

We lost George Fullerton at age 86. George was an integral part of the early Fender days, going on to found Music Man and later partner with Leo Fender helping found G&L-- the "G" being for George.

The LA Times obituary has a nice historical write-up on Mr. Fullerton. Doesn't seem too long ago that we also saw the passing of Don Randall.

It was better to find the scorpion on the last camping day, if at all.

Wishbone Ash Guitarist Selling Rare Vintage Fender

eBay Starcaster auction

Guitar collector mojo alert!

Yeah, I'm pimpin' a lotta gear these days, so apologies to the regular readers who probably expect more content variety. Nevertheless this is a very interesting gear find.

The seller, claiming to be Ted Turner from the legendary Wishbone Ash, is auctioning this vintage Fender Starcaster. Yes, the original Starcaster model was a 70's attempt by Fender to attract the 330 series Gibson market. Nowadays, Fender is reusing the "Starcaster" moniker on an ultra-cheap-cheese department store Strat-type guitar that goes for under $100. Pretty dismal, I know...

Anyway, regardless of all that, this looks like a pretty clean guitar. The bullet truss rod, 3 bolt neck and skunk stripe certainly reflect early to mid-70's features. The Wide Range pickups of that era have the real magnetic adjustable poles as opposed to the steel poles in today's Fender WR humbucker reissues. The orig. WR's are fat sounding. My '72 Tele Thinline has a big loud sound, so I imagine these hollow Starcasters to be very sweet when set up well.

Do your homework and contact the seller with any questions. If he's really Ted from Wishbone Ash, and can verify things to your satisfaction, this would add mojo to any guitar collection.

eBay auction Fender collectible

"Hey Blondie!!!"

COLLECTOR ALERT!

Eli Wallach could have been yelling at this one-- already more than a few years old when that movie came out. This is one of the sweetest vintage relic Strat listings I've seen in awhile. The listing features TONS of great photos, ultra close-ups, details and specs, including the standard vintage disassembly dissection shots. Yeah, this is the real deal alright!

Quite a war horse, she is a textbook study for anyone interested in guitar aging patterns. You'll wanna get over there soon and snag the photos for relic research purposes. Textbook!

The bidding is heavy! Evidently someone's not getting that boat this Summer.
